The AHI is not a distinct legal entity, but since 10.10.2020 a dependent institute of the Academy for the Advancement of Physiochemical Sustainability (Akademie zur Förderung physiochemischer Nachhaltigkeit). The Academy is a registered association recognized as a non-profit organization with headquarters in East Westphalian Vlotho and the statutory purpose of advancing sustainable research and education, art and culture, and public health care. In principle, the Academy is designed to support a number of dependent research institutes. Accordingly, the Academy sees itself more as a structural parent body (i.e. governing association) of the AHI – and, in the future, potentially comparable institutes with a different substantive focus – and is primarily responsible for funding the work of the AHI, which must thus comply with the Academy’s statutory purposes without exception. Thus, the activities of the AHI are directly and obligatorily tied to the fulfilment of one of these purposes.
The Academy is led by a Presidium, currently consisting of the President JD Rolfes, the Vice President and Treasurer Mario Jörges, and Sarah Siemons.
